Susan Matych-Hager

An art minor in college, Susan Matych-Hager has always been interested in the visual arts. After taking a glass bead course in 2003 at the Toledo Museum of Art, she began her adventure in art glass bead-making, also known as lampwork, torchwork or flamework. Matych-Hager is intrigued by the colors and textures created in glass beads. The artist states, “I am fascinated by the rhythm and movement that can be created in an otherwise static form… It excites me when glass is combined with other materials in jewelry such as crystals, metal and pearls to enhance the inherent beauty of the glass.” When creating jewelry, the artist uses quality materials, including sterling silver and gold-filled metal, freshwater pearls, and Swarovski crystals. Although Matych-Hager beads may be similar, no two beads are ever exactly alike.
